back cove 34O

Back Cove is known and revered for its efficient, single-inboard engines, and rightly so. But in the summer of 2020, the traditional Maine-based shipyard broke the mold with the 34O, an entirely new and revolutionary hull designed to work with outboard power. Even so, this yacht retains all the signatures of its classic Downeast forebears, from its rugged hull and elegant lines to its proud, upturned bow, recognizable on so many lobster boats. A rich blend of timeless heritage and cutting-edge design, the 34O offers a rare level of power, speed, and efficiency that allows owners to expand the reach of their adventures.

Outboard engines make all the difference on this yacht. Standard twin 300-horsepower Yamahas certainly satisfy any need for speed, topping out at 37.5 knots, with a more sensible 24-knot cruising pace yields a range of 214 nautical miles at 25.3 gallons per hour. Dial it down to trawler speeds of 11.5 or lower, and the range and economy of your journey grows ever wider. These engines also change and enhance onboard life, making space for the generous living quarters and superb storage. Long-haulers will note with approval the lazarette beneath the cockpit and the massive lift-up stowage area below the salon where diesel engines would be, perfect for storing bicycles, paddleboards, and any other gear you might need for your summer vacation. Storage lockers to port and starboard offer even more space for smaller items.

In dock, onlookers will admire the serene white gelcoat and impeccable brightwork. A centerline transom door leads to the cockpit from the wraparound swim platform, making boarding safe and easy. Once aboard, guests can mingle on the sociable aft cockpit, with substantial seating to port and starboard. A wide, aft-facing bench seat completes this convivial layout, encouraging conversation across the cockpit, but can also convert to additional salon seating when desired. After a day of crabbing, this is the perfect spot to spread out some newspapers on the teak tables and enjoy the briny haul with friends and family.

Stepping onto the helm deck, owners and guests alike will find understated, modern design at its best, all the while proudly nodding to Back Cove’s traditional ethos. Bright, white walls and upholstery impart a serene, lively feel while natural wood accents like cherry ceiling beams, handholds, and other details bring a sense of warmth and craftsmanship to the space. Large opening windows and a sliding hatch above the helm invites natural light and fresh air, adding to that peaceful, easy feeling.

Open and versatile, the helm deck is the indoor mecca of the 34O, seamlessly integrating a lounge area, galley, and helm station. Guests will flock portside to the convertible U-shaped dinette, which features a teak and maple inlay table. This is a superb spot for dinner parties and celebrations, seating four or more guests with a front-seat view of the sights and sounds of the boat: the hum of the engine, the quiet focus of the captain, peals of laughter out on the cockpit, perhaps even the sound of fresh fish being seared in the starboard galley.

While this boat amply accommodates guests across several social zones, it’s also perfect couples and boating partners. The forward section of the portside dinette turns into a plush mate’s seat, perfect for a companion to assist in navigation, or simply kick back and enjoy captain’s eye views from the windshield. Operators, meanwhile, will rejoice at the starboard helm, which remains true to Back Cove’s motto, ‘practical elegance.’ A 16-inch Stazo wood grain steering wheel is solid and striking, while cherry fold-down and booster steps ensures everyone is comfortable at the helm.

Owners will certainly have no trouble cooking up an impressive meal here. Stretching fore and aft, the galley features a two-burner cooktop, a built-in under-counter microwave oven, solid surface countertop with four drawers below, a deep round sink with a drop-in cover, and a discreet pull-out garbage and recycling container. Two drawer refrigerators found below the mate and helm seats offer ample space for provisions.

Two short steps take you down to the owner’s cabin, where the 34O’s Downeast roots are undeniable. Private entry is provided by sliding Rich, varnished cherry interiors and teak-and-holly laminate flooring give this space a classic, coastal sophistication, while a sumptuous double island bed offers all the comforts of home. Storage is practical and discreet, with plenty of under-bed space, a cedar-lined hanging locker, and a mini-locker for small valuables.

A high headboard allows owners to sit upright with ample headroom as they curl up with a good book or ruminate on the day’s adventure. No matter where the boat is anchored, this cabin remains cool and comfortable thanks to an air conditioning system with reverse cycle heat. If you want some summer breeze instead, simply open the overhead hatch. Dimmable overhead LED lights and Fusion stereo speakers invite owners to set their own mood, while a charging station provides a safe place to charge most devices overnight. A head and separate shower are found to port and starboard, behind two understated cherry doors. The head features a built-in vanity with a sink, storage below, and a surprisingly large mirror above. The portside shower room features a generous shower stall with opening portholes and a luxe molded seat.
