back cove 372

Among yacht enthusiasts, Maine-based shipyard Back Cove Yachts is justly admired for its traditional, compact boats built in the classic Downeast tradition, inspired by commercial lobster boats that once dominated the Maine Coast. From the gleaming brightwork to the stunning joinery, craftsmanship is the order of the day when it comes to Back Cove’s formidable fleet, but the brand is not content to rest on its laurels. When production molds for the highly popular Back Cove 37 became worn out from producing 200-plus hulls for over a decade, the shipyard knew it was time for a redesign. The result of their efforts is the superb Back Cove 372.

Incorporating more than a decade’s worth of customer feedback and the latest advancements in yacht design, the Back Cove 372 is truly a yacht lover’s dream. The convivial aft cockpit is in that Goldilocks zone – not too big, not too small, and perfect for entertaining. Two L-shaped settees with optional unfinished teak tables flank either side of the transom, with an aft-facing seat situated forward and to starboard. An optional MakeFast sunshade is one of many new upgrades available to buyers, with a built-in tension system and lightweight carbon fiber poles for easy set-up.

After mingling here awhile, owners and guests can make their way to the swim platform with undermount swim ladder and bathe in the sea. For the more adventurous, this generous swim platform features pop-up cleats to hold a tender. A nearby hot and cold cockpit shower awaits to wash sea and sand from your hair. As evening falls, three 6-inch Fusion Apollo stereo speakers allow you to set the mood inside and out with your favorite playlist. A single glass door and bifold starboard window allow the salon to open up onto the cockpit, creating a large, free-flowing party space.

Once inside, guests will immediately feel the warm embrace of striking cherrywood interiors and uncannily realistic teak-and-holly laminate soles. Natural light from the aft door and window, forward windscreen and opening side windows illuminates this space, imparting an open, breezy feel. To starboard, a J-shaped dinette will seat four or five people around a high-gloss hi-lo table, a versatile spot perfect for intimate meals or group celebrations. When the party winds down, this dinette converts into a double berth for guests. A portside settee faces the dining area, adding to the sociable layout of the space. Storage drawers below each seating area offer discreet, stylish space for anything you wish to keep onboard.

Once you’ve seen the helm station, it becomes clear that Back Cove has taken its customers’ wishes on board. Perfect for couples and boating companions, the starboard helm features Llebroc helm and mate’s seats, each with a 3-step fixed footrest for maximum comfort. A black windshield liner and an upholstered helm pod reduce the glare from the sun, while a SeaStar hydraulic steering wheel with tilt helm pump, Side Power bow thruster with joystick control, 7-inch Raymarine digital engine display (or optional Garmin display), an illuminated compass and optional stern thrusters provide everything a discerning captain requires. EPS steering is another new option which replaces the earlier 37’s Power-Assist option and offers incredible precision and control and additional display features. A storage compartment for whatever you like – including an optional icemaker or freezer – is located below the helm.

The mid-galley, too, has been upgraded on the 372. Located just a few steps below, but still within sight of the salon and helm area, the galley is a simple yet stylish masterclass in space-maximizing design. By its very nature, the mid-galley is sociable and open, allowing the chef to concentrate on cooking up a gourmet meal while interacting with guests as they lounge in the salon. An elegant L-shaped countertop houses a large stainless-steel single with a drop-in cover, an updated two-burner induction cooktop, an AC/DC stainless-steel drawer fridge-freezer, and substantial workspace, while a convection/microwave oven is built into an overhead cabinet. Drawers and drawer storage below the counter, a silverware drawer pull out beneath the stove, and a cherry spice rack provide space for all the necessities and more.

Accommodation aboard this yacht is equally impressive, with not one but two staterooms forward of the galley. Down three steps, guests will find a snug but comfortable starboard stateroom with a double bed, under-berth drawers, a side table with a storage locker below, and gentle natural light from an overhead hatch with a Dometic OCEANair Skyscreen. Reading lights encourage guests to wind down the evening with a good book, while a charging station allows guests to recharge their devices overnight. Varnished cherry interiors found in the salon continue here and in the owner’s suite, offering a warm, chic vibe.

Located at the bow, the owner’s suite is private, luxurious, and serene, with varnished cherrywood joinery and a large queen island bed that is sure to lull users into a deep, revitalizing sleep. Opening portholes and an overhead hatch suffuse this space with natural light that rounds out the warm glow of the reading lamps on either side of the bed. To starboard, a long and sizeable multi-drawer dresser with dovetailed drawers offers ample space for your wardrobe and other belongings, while a portside cedar-lined hanging locker, outboard shelves with cherry fiddle forward and lockers above provide additional storage. While owners and guests will have to share the serene portside day head, it is functionally an en suite, with private access from the owner’s suite in additional to a public entryway in the hall.

Though small, this head offers a full, immersive spa experience. It is easy to imagine rising early, wiping the sleep from your eyes, and padding over to the separate shower stall where a bench seat awaits beneath a detachable showerhead that falls like heav rainwater from above. An opening porthole offers ventilation and contact with the elements, while a hatch above the cherry-framed mirror admits the soft morning light. Users will be struck further cherrywood accents, from the recessed toilet paper holder to the below-counter drawers. Other features include a sizeable round stainless-steel sink, toilet, and integrated sliding storage beneath the mirror, the perfect spot for your favorite toiletries.

With a 16-degree deadrise, high freeboard, a gently curved sheer, this robust vessel offers silky smooth handling even in choppy waters. The 372 is powered by a single peppy 600-horsepower Cummins QSC 8.3 diesel engine that reaches top speeds of nearly 29 knots according to Lazzara’s own speed trials. An eminently comfortable cruising speed of 25-26 knots yields a range of about 300 miles at around 23 gallons per hour. Owners also have the option of upgrading to a more powerful 600-horsepower Volvo Penta D8 engine with a WOT speed of 30 knots and a cruise speed of around 25 knots.
