back cove 41 Express

The Back Cove 41 is the perfect choice for serious cruisers.

Built for serious cruisers, the Back Cove 41 is easy to love. A classic Downeaster in the Maine tradition, the 41’s sleek lines and deft handling encapsulate Back Cove’s obsession with artistry and performance. Formed in 2003 by enthusiastic Sabre Yachts dealers who dreamed of compact, efficient cruisers s inspired by the rugged lobster boats of the Maine coast, Back Cove Yachts has quickly earned a reputation for ‘practical elegance’, the brand’s personal mantra.

First launched in 2015, the 41 is the largest model in Back Cove’s fleet, designed for long-range cruising with two queen staterooms and a convertible double berth. With three engine options from Cummins and Volvo, this sturdy flagship is especially ideal for circumnavigating the Great Loop at a slow-distance 7 knots with an impressive range of 1,716 nautical miles. As you creep your way along the Hudson River, perhaps, guests can lounge on two L-shaped sofas on the cockpit, cups of coffee on the teak dining tables with steam trailing up into the morning sky. To starboard, owners have the option of installing an addition single seat or an electric grill. An optional sunshade extends all the way to the aft end of the cockpit, offering shelter from the midday head. This is a versatile space, perfect for sociable waterfront dinners as well as quiet contemplation of the slowly moving landscape.

Fine American cherrywood interiors greet you as you enter the sliding glass door to the salon and helm area. This is a sociable, inviting space elevated by impeccable finishes throughout, with light-toned walls and upholstery that enhance the bright, warm woodwork and teak and holly laminate sole. To port, the long galley is a thing of beauty, unobtrusive but highly useable, with a two-burner induction cooktop, stainless-steel two-drawer fridge, AC/DC freezer beneath the helm seat, convection microwave, drawers and storage below the counter, and overhead storage lockers. Designed to connect the salon and aft cockpit, this galley encourages guests to congregate and interact with the chef.

Facing the galley, a starboard sofa curves around a glossy teak table, the perfect spot for indoor dining. A clever starboard power window allows contact with the elements and outdoor activities. This is the perfect spot catch up with old friends as other guests mingle outside. Queue up your favorite playlist and set the mood indoors and out, thanks to Fusion stereo speakers strategically placed throughout the main deck. As you party into the night, the dining area converts to a double berth, accommodating unexpected guests.

Up and forward to starboard, the raised helm will delight even the most exacting captain. Two Llebroc helm seats allow a companion to help navigate in comfort and style. Flip-down footrests, drink holders, and a glove box offer creature comforts, while cutting-edge equipment and a Raymarine electronics system provide a cutting-edge cruising experience with two large Raymarine MFDs, Side Power bow and stern thrusters with joystick controls, SeaStar hydraulic steering, and a 20” Stazo wood grain steering wheel. A hatch in the sole leads to a large bilge storage area and a starboard helm door leads to the side deck for easy maneuvering and access to the bow. A starboard settee offers guests a captain’s-eye view and a chance to chat with the operator while underway. Two electric Lewmar sliding hatches invite fresh air and sunlight, adding a natural ambience to the space.

Down a central companionway, a stunning forward owner’s suite awaits, with a queen island bed surrounded by drawers and storage below. Cherry hull ceilings add warmth to this cozy space, while two opening portholes and two overhead hatches with OCEANair Skyscreens allow in natural light and fresh air.

Owners will enjoy ample storage space, with a cedar-lined hanging locker to port and a finely crafted multi-drawer bureau with dovetailed drawers to starboard. This is a serene place to end the day, whether you’re curling up with a good book or unwinding with a movie on the 27” Samsung smart TV. Dimmable lights allow you to adjust the mood, while a charging station with USB ports allows you to replenish your phone while you sleep. An additional Fusion speaker is installed here, perfect for soundtracking your morning routine or catching up on your favorite podcast when you have a quiet moment.

The owner’s suite enjoys a relaxing private bathroom which boasts two opening portholes, subtle wood accents, and impeccable white interiors and fittings. Above, another sliding hatch draws in natural light, washing the space in a soft glow perfect. Decompress on the bench of the separate shower, soaking up the steam as it floats carefree in the shaft of light streaming through the porthole. An angled Corian countertop maximizes surface space, allowing enough room for a range of toiletries, although an attractive built-in cabinet offers safe storage for your favorite aftershave or perfume and other luxury items. A cherry-framed mirror sits above the sink, next to the toilet, which discreetly faces away from the shower. A second mirror on the aft bulkhead reflects light and offers users a chance to check out their look as they exit the bathroom.

Across the hall, guests will find the amidships VIP suite, a snug but comfortable queen stateroom with en suite access to the portside day head. Tucked behind the floating companionway, this cabin is a quaint hideaway with a private feel, a perfect retreat for guests on extended journeys. Despite its size, this space never feels cramped. Air and light circulate freely here, with an opening porthole and an overhead Skyscreen. Storage space is seamlessly integrated below the bed, with a built-in cedar-lined hanging locker and a substantial bedside table with drawers. Guests can dim the overhead lights as needed, or simply use the nearby reading light. Like the owner’s suite, this room features a charging station for phones and other devices.

Back Cove has not held back with the day head, which is bright and airy thanks to more Lewmar hatches and portholes. A full-length mirror on the door is an unexpected luxury, while the built-in vanity, sink, and cherry-framed mirror are finished to the same standard as the owner’s head. A shower next to the toilet is slightly less sumptuous, but perfectly serviceable for longer trips.

Handling the 41 is a looper’s dream, with a highly responsive electronic throttle and gear system that is simple and practical to use. A punchy single 600mhp Cummins QSC 8.3 electronically controlled engine with ZF gear reaches max speeds of 26.6 knots, a swift pace for a single-engine cruiser. Of course, this yacht was designed to cover long distances, including overnight cruising. The 41 truly excels at trawler speeds around 7.5 knots, which yield an impressive fuel economy of 1.5 gallons per hour, enough to make even the most committed speed fiend’s heart sing.
