regal 38 XO

It can be difficult to innovate in the crowded sports cruiser market. One boat blurs into the next and, it seems, there are few ways to make a fresh mark or a lasting impression. But with the 38 XO model, first launched in 2019, Regal has done just that. This yacht combines the very best characteristics of a hefty, live-aboard sports cruiser with the increased agility and versatility of an outboard vessel for a watercraft that is striking, bold and original. Take to the high seas and enjoy coastal cruising at its best, or steer your way towards those hard-to-reach inland watercourses. See a nice beach? Simply sidle right up to the sand and park your vessel within stumbling distance of sugar-white beaches and palm-studded strands without worrying about engine damage. Hover this craft directly above colorful coral reefs, tour the Florida backwaters, and quit worrying about the tidal water-levels at that enchanting estuary you’ve always wanted to investigate. A cruiser unlike any other, this is a yacht that will take you places you’ve never dreamed of.

38-feet of reinforced fiberglass has been sculpted into a sharp, sleek and assertive form with plenty of nautical curves, clean lines, a sloping profile to transom and masses of dynamic side glazing. Though it may appear to be a lean and athletic sports cruiser from afar, as you draw closer and embark you will better appreciate this vessel’s elegant, tasteful and stylish living spaces, from where you can enjoy the briny sea air, tan for hours across al-fresco seating, or retreat indoors for cozy entertaining. On the foredeck there is a double-width sunpad comprising a series of modular panels that can be lifted up to create backrests. Pop-up a Cabana sunshade out here for sheltered relaxation, or flip-up the forward backrests to create a snug bow lounge at the very front of the yacht. A shaded aft-cockpit at the rear end of the boat will host convivial afternoons spent reclining across an L-shaped transom sofa in plush marine-grade and diamond-stitched upholstery, while a pop-up table with an extending, teak-lined surface will host plates of freshly grilled lobster for lunch, sophisticated cocktails during the evenings and satisfied smiles all day. Directly across from this stands a cockpit refreshment center with wet-bar facilities, an outdoor grill, a pull-out refrigerator and stylish marble-effect work surfaces. Head a few steps down to stern, meanwhile, to encounter two MarineTred-lined swim platforms either side of the outboards, and some of the most capacious storage spaces ever seen on a yacht of this class, including sports lockers and a transom lazarette that also allows for direct access to the engine room.

Sliding glass doors enhance the free-flowing appeal across the main deck, with the cockpit wet-bar connecting with the aft-galley to create one half-in, half-out island kitchen. A pair of cream-toned sofas provide plenty of room to escape the elements and relax, while a single helm seat to starboard presents pilots with excellent visibility and long-haul comfort. On this helm you will discover Yamaha digital binnacles, a dual glass cockpit touch-screen from Garmin, a bow thruster joystick, LED-backed trim-tab buttons, optional Seakeeper stabilizer switches and a power-assisted, hand-wrapped steering wheel.

Central to this boat’s appeal is its overnight versatility, with guests able to stay out at sea long after other vessels have headed back to dock. Splendid soirees lit by moonlight, night-time swims with the underwater LED lighting switched on, midnight chatter into the early hours, and the briefest of commutes down to the lower deck where elegant and seductive surrounds beckon you to sleep. Two full-beam staterooms, each with a queen-sized bed, benefit from the engines being pushed aft of the stern to offer guests extra room to breathe. Driftwood and oak surfaces play against the recessed lighting or natural light streaming in through strip hull glazing, while timber-lined lockers keep your luggage out of sight. The bed in the aft cabin can be turned into twins which sit across from a port side sofa lined in plush leather, while in the bow cabin there is a skylight and screen doors for added privacy. The rooms share head facilities on this level, with a spa-like bathroom to starboard with a flush toilet, a vanity mirror and a sink, while a separate shower room to port boasts a luxurious teak lattice sole and bench seating.

The 38 XO is powered by triple 300HP Yamaha 4.2L F300 outboard engines attached to the stern that should promote top speeds of up to 43 knots at full-throttle. If you require that extra burst of energy, simply upgrade your outboards and power this boat with three 350HP Yamaha 5.3L F350 motors that should deliver quicker speeds at the top end. Long-distance cruising is a specialty of this watercraft, with the most efficient cruising speed clocking in at between 31 and 34 knots. At this pace you should be able to ride your yacht for over 232 nautical miles before requiring a refuel, while at the even lower speed of 7 knots you will serenely glide along for over 384 nautical miles. Thanks to the solid build of this vessel and the positioning of the outboards flush of the hull itself this is a relatively quiet ride, with sound levels during test runs never breaching the 80-decibel mark. With a draft of just 38 inches when the engines are in the water, or a mere 26 inches with the motors propped up, this is the sort of vessel that will manage the shallow waters with ease. Yet the outboard optimized hull, with a perky transom deadrise of 18 degrees, is equally well-suited to riding the swells as you steer away from the coast and head towards the open ocean.
