Inspired by traditional lobster boats, the Sabre 48 Flybridge would not look out of place in Stonington, one of Maine’s foremost lobster ports. Its proud, stately lines and rugged hull have all the hallmarks of traditional Downeast lobster boats, but cast your eyes upward and there is one thing that sets it apart from its forbears: the flybridge. Those familiar with the Maine-based shipyard’s popular 48 Salon Express will recognize this yacht, identical in most respects except for this feature. The sole flybridge model in Sabre’s current fleet, the 48 Flybridge is bolder and more thrilling than its sister yacht. Designed with experienced and adventurous owners in mind, the 48 Flybridge is ideal for those who want to cruise offshore waters with the wind whipping in their hair.
This hardy vessel also has a softer side: pod-driven engines offer an exquisitely quiet ride from the lower helm. At top speeds of 40 knots, sound levels remain impressively low at 75 dBA. It’s also safer for the environment, thanks to Sabre’s VIP resin infusion process, which reduces volatile organic compound emissions. The composite parts are also lighter and more durable, lowering the yacht’s weight and fuel costs. Twin 550mhp D8 IPS-700 Volvo Penta engines reach top speeds of over 33 knots and offer a comfortable cruising speed of 29.5 knots with a range of 303 nautical miles.
The outdoor spaces on this yacht are impressive and welcoming, perfect for entertaining friends and family. The lower aft cockpit features an extensive settee that stretches from the portside transom door all along the stern and to starboard. Served by a glossy folding teak table, this is an exquisite al fresco dining area that seats up to five people. Linger here after dinner with your closest friends as the rest of the party spills up onto the flybridge, their laughter and conversation syncopating in the air like free jazz. If you prefer a different kind of soundtrack, fire up the Fusion Apollo Stereo System from the cockpit (or the helm, if you choose), which features four speakers throughout the main deck that are sure set the mood.
Ascent to the bridge from the cockpit is safe and easy, with full steps and handholds leading the way to the upper helm and dining area. To port, U-shaped seating wraps around a stunning folding teak table. This thoughtfully arranged space is more substantial than it first appears, with space for up to six people including the helm seats. Owners and guests can head up here as the sun sets and admire the sky’s changing colors as they drink the crisp, cold wine that’s been chilling in the AC/DC drawer fridge (tucked below the forward seat) all afternoon.
Owner-operators and their companions will enjoy the use of an Ultraleather Stidd helm seat and optional companion seat that face a superb upper helm console equipped with Volvo Penta engine controls, joystick, a large panel for navigational electronics, and two Volvo-Garmin 8617 displays. The sloped Venturi windscreen minimizes glare and keeps tough winds in check.
This yacht’s interiors are stylish and hospitable. Enter the salon and sit back in the L-shaped settee to starboard with an aft chaise long, the perfect indoor lounge, with a hi-low, high-gloss table that adjusts to suit your needs. This space facilitates your morning coffee and newspaper routine as ably as a five-course meal. A secret hatch beneath the salon leads to a utility room which can be used as a workspace with bench, drawers, and shelves, or as an optional crew quarters with head.
Forward and to starboard is the lower helm, the operational center of the boat which features mates seating ideal for boating companions and couples. Captains will delight at the dual Volvo-Garmin MFDs, autopilot with joystick driving, Volvo-Penta IPS Plus joystick controller in the Stidd armrest, twin lever shift and throttle-control with single-level and cruise control software, a Ritchie compass, switch controls and a custom teak steering wheel.
Two well-appointed staterooms are found below deck, sure to please both owners and guests. The amidships owner’s suite is a private paradise. A Shoji-style passageway, closet doors, and portlight screen panels impart an elegant, bright atmosphere while rich cherry hull ceilings bring warmth and character to the space, a callback to Sabre’s Maine heritage. An overhead deck hatch with Ocean Air screens or blinds lets in fresh, natural light when desired. Two hanging lockers fore and aft of the bed offer plenty of storage space, as do drawers under and aft of the bed.
This suite boasts a private head with serene blue and green tiles and white paneling with light wood trim, a continuation of the Shoji style in the bedroom. A high-gloss cherry countertop with a semi-recessed sink with a vanity cabinet below and a cherry-framed mirror above allow owners to prepare for the day in comfort. A separate shower stall with a swing door is the perfect place to wash away the cares of the day, with an opening port to the side deck, a deck hatch overhead, and a ventilation blower to ensure plenty of airflow.
The VIP suite is situated forward, with a large island berth and private access to a bright, well-lit head with a separate shower stall which features a small shower bench, ideal for enjoying a nice steam during your morning shower. A solid-surface vanity top, stainless-steel undermount sink, a cherry-trimmed mirror and towel bars offer all the home comforts your guests require.
