sabre 58 Salon Express

The 58 Salon Express design features large windows to flood the living areas in natural light, and a main door that opens fully from port to starboard, comfortably merging exterior and interior spaces.

Maine-based Sabre Yachts was born in the 1960s when founder Roger Hewson drafted and built the ‘Sabre Scow’. This swashbuckling sailboat’s sleek, bladelike lines reminded Hewson of the elegant Sabres from an earlier age, precise yet graceful swords carried by soldiers, sailors, and pirates. 60 years later, the 58 Salon Express is far more luxurious than a scow, but it remains true to Hewson’s Downeast ethos of exquisite craftsmanship and performance.

The queen of Sabre’s Express Salon line, the 58 SE is a luxurious yet workmanlike yacht with all the hallmarks the brand’s New England heritage. A magnetic blend of upper-crust flair – its stately profile, proud tapered bow, and backswept pilothouse – and relaxed simplicity, this yacht is both welcoming and sophisticated, stylish but eminently livable. Designed specifically for owner-operators and their friends and family, the 58 SE is a superb choice for offshore cruising.

The hardtop appears to hover above the glazed superstructure, drawing the eye directly towards the sociable cockpit. As the sun rises, guests can throw on a blanket and enjoy a cup of coffee on the transom sofa at the gleaming teak dining table. As evening descends and the sun dips below the horizon, this spot becomes a cool chill-out zone perfect for al fresco dining and cocktails. At anchor, the swim platform at the stern is the perfect perch for swimming, diving, or simply looking at the sea’s expanse with your feet in the water.

When open, spotless folding glass doors seamlessly connect the cockpit to the salon, encouraging a natural flow where guests can mingle freely. There is nothing awkward about this boat – the layouts feel organic and intuitive, perhaps because Sabre builds its vessels from the hull outward, allowing the yacht’s natural form to guide the interior.

The salon begins with a well-appointed aft galley that facilitates the highest standard of indoor-outdoor living. Cleverly positioned to serve both the cockpit and the main salon, guests can congregate at the galley, interacting with their hosts as they cook. Stunning U-shaped Vitaria quartz countertops provide plenty of workspace while a two-burner induction cooktop and a Wolf microwave oven allow you to turn up the heat. There is plenty of space for fresh and frozen produce thanks to a stainless-steel Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, separate 24” units with two drawers each. A pull-out wastebasket is discreet and unobtrusive, while dry storage outboard offers further space for provisions. Overhead cabinets and a starboard serving cabinet with four

The forward lounge and dining area is a sedate contrast of rich, bright cherrywood paneling and light-toned upholstery. To port, a U-shaped sofa and high-low teak dining table sit beneath the large glazed windows that surround the salon, facing a long settee to starboard. Six Fusion Apollo Multi-Zone Stereo speakers extend from the salon to the cockpit, allowing your well-chosen playlist to enchant the entire main deck and unify the vibe. Guests can take in the views from the cherry-framed windscreen from the mate’s settee, found forward and to port.

The starboard helmstation is a glory to behold, with a gorgeous traditional cherrywood console outfitted with cutting-edge equipment. Captains will appreciate the dual Volvo-Penta 8617 MFDs, autopilot with joystick driving, an armrest joystick controller, custom teak steering wheel, and twin lever shift and throttle control with single level and cruise control software. Two Ultraleather Stidd seats allow you to command all this and more with your companion by your side. An electric sliding sunroof offers natural light and vertical views, while a side door leads to the starboard side deck that improves visibility and makes maneuvering a piece of cake.

The robust Kevin Burns-designed hull is a modified deep-V planing hull that eats waves for breakfast. Yet it also provides a remarkably smooth, resilient ride, one of the hallmarks of Sabre yachts, descended as they are from sturdy lobster and fishing boats. iPad minis at the mate’s settee and in the owner’s suite allow owner-operators monitor systems and control circuits with ease, while a fully-networked CZone NMEA 2000 electrical system with onboard WiFi and digital switching. Powerful twin 725-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS-950 engines boast top speeds of 31.1 knots, fast enough to please thrillseekers and lovers of sporty rides. Dial it down to Sabre’s ideal 26.7-knot cruising speed, however, and you’ll get much more out of your journey, with a range of 337 nautical miles with a fuel economy of 57 gallons per hour.

Below deck, a separate companionway leads to the amidships private owner’s suite, a relaxing full-beam sanctuary. A mylar-faced foam noise barrier in the engine room and a bulkhead allows owners to kick back on the king bed in peace and quiet, with only the sound of the wall-mounted television or perhaps ice melting in a nightcap on the bedside table. Two large hull window and a skylight offer a bounty of natural light and a true sense of space, while two discreet cedar-lined hanging lockers and underbed drawers provide plenty of storage for your wardrobe. A table built into a cherrywood nook acts as a desk or vanity table as desired, with a commodious tray drawer, multiple outlets, gentle overhead lighting and a swing-out stool.

Owners will rejoice when they see the commodious en suite bathroom, large and well-equipped enough to make you feel truly pampered. Boasting a quartz countertop with a round sunken sink with a large wood-trimmed mirror above. A toilet sits nearby on a slightly raised sole beneath a small, horizontal window. The walk-in shower features custom wall and floor tiles that gleam like oyster shells, an opening porthole to let out steam, and a built-in bench for users to sit and decompress.

The VIP suite, located at the bow, is worthy of the name: your most valued guests will enjoy a low-profile queen island bed framed by cherrywood walls and built-in storage throughout, including underbed drawers, enclosed upper shelves, a cedar-lined hanging locker, and a bureau to port. A large TV is mounted to the forward-facing bulkhead, perfect for catching up on your favorite shows. This private space enjoys en suite access to the day head, which features a separate walk-in shower, opening porthole, and basin sink atop a Corian countertop with vanity storage and an overhead cabinet. A further guest cabin is found to starboard, with a double bed that converts to two twin beds when needed. This versatile space is perfect for kids, but spacious and stylish enough for adult guests. It’s also private, a rarity among the oft-neglected smaller cabins, boasting a forward hanging locker, large wall-mounted TV, and an en suite bathroom with separate shower stall.
